Intro:
We are heading into the weekend and simultaneously heading into June!
Here’s some interesting history about the month of June in NC:
🪖 One could say that the Civil War began for North Carolina on June 10, 1861. On that day, the First Regiment of North Carolina Infantry engaged U.S. troops in what has been called the first battle of the Civil War.
🔥 On June 12, 1911, a devastating fire destroyed much of the business district in downtown Apex including many of the old frame stores, the Merchants and Farmer’s Bank, and the postmaster’s house. As merchants built back, they often did so with fireproof brick buildings to replace the old frame structures.
On June 18, 1941, the North Carolina Symphony was founded. Since then, the symphony has become one of the most highly regarded regional orchestras in the United States.
And some cool things going on this June in NC:
🌿 June 5-11 is National Gardening Week and June 13 is National Weed Your Garden Day. Celebrate by joining the Town of Apex and SWANEC (Southern Wake Area Native Ecosystem Conservation group) for an Invasive Species Removal Day at Apex Community Park on June 7.
🐻 June 7 is National Black Bear Day and the 11th Annual Black Bear Festival will take place on the 6th & 7th just 2 hours from here in Plymouth, NC.
🏳️🌈 Saturday, June 14, the 5th-Annual Apex Pride Festival will take place from 10am-4pm at the Town Hall Campus, celebrating with live music, 100+ vendors, food trucks, Drag Extravaganza, Raleigh Bubble Man, Juggle-Boy, a magic show, inflatables, face painting and more!
🫶🏿 Saturday, June 21, the 5th-Annual Juneteenth in the Peak Festival will take place from 12pm-7pm on the Town Hall Campus. Celebrate freedom, culture and community with live performances, food trucks, history exhibit and wax museum, basketball court, bounce houses, a genealogy station & virtual MLK experience, a free haircut bus, and much more.
🐝 June 20-26 is National Pollinator Week. Join Pollinators in the Peak for An Evening in the Garden at Apex Nature Park on Thursday, June 26.

Miscellaneous:
🗿 5th Annual Sculpture Walk
Eleven sculptures are installed in and around downtown Apex featuring artists from North Carolina and beyond. Scan the QR code at each sculpture to be the judge! The sculpture with the highest rating will win the "People's Choice Award" - voting closes on June 16th. Here’s a map of their locations.
🧞 1,500 Acres and 4,000 Residential Units
After nearly 18 months of anticipation, the Disney Asteria community is now officially underway about 30 minutes from here in Pittsboro. See an aerial rendering here.
🏘️ 20 Acres and 23 Luxury Homes
Ok, back over to Apex now… National homebuilder, Toll Brothers, is building a new residential community in Apex called Weston Reserve. The community, between Hwy 64 and Olive Chapel near Reedy Branch Creek, will have 23 single-family homes starting at $1.3M.

If you have kids in Wake County Schools, look for an email from Infinite Campus in late June with instructions on how to set up your new account to access your student’s grades, schedules and bus stop information.
