8 People Hate This Newsletter
Which is weird, because this weekly newsletter is everything you need to know about Apex, NC emailed to you every Thursday morning at 6am.
👋 Good morning, Apex NC! Today is January 16, 2025 and this is the second issue of The Peak Weekly.
Before we jump in, I just want to take a moment to say THANK YOU.
This newsletter was just a silly idea. One that I had no idea if anyone would care about.
But when we gained 77 subscribers before even sending out first email last week, I was very humbled and excited. And… a little nervous.
Then, I sent the first email on January 9, and this happened:

The Peak Weekly is sending email #2 to 900 subscribers!
You guys are the best. ❤️ This is so much fun to create and having people in the community cheering me on is such a cool thing that I never expected.
Thank you for reading, thank you for sharing and thank you for the support!
→ And to the 8 people who unsubscribed… not cool 👎️

Anyway, let’s get to it. Here is what’s inside today:
📂 Miscellaneous: Some quick, random notes that you may not know
🗓️ Things to Do: Events and activities in and around Apex for the next 7 days.
🏢 Local Business: Updates on business and developments.
🏛️ Civil News: The latest from local government.
🐶 Animal of the Week: Featured pet looking for a good home.
👀 A Look Ahead: A quick peak at things to know beyond this week.
🔎 What’s Missing?: Tell me how to make this newsletter better!

Miscellaneous
📫️ Monday: No Mail, No Money, & No Mayor
In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the post office along with most banks and all Apex Town facilities will be closed on Monday. (obviously we still have a Mayor but I needed another ‘M’ word)
🗑️ No Changes to Trash / Recycling
Trash and recycling will run on a normal schedule despite the holiday. Yard Waste will not run on Monday, but crews will try to hit all routes on the shortened schedule. If your yard waste is missed this week, it will be collected the following week.
📱 There’s an App for That
Speaking of trash schedules, this may be a good time to remind you that Apex has an app for that! If you are ever unsure about trash/recycling schedule changes, you can always check service to your address in the ApexCollects app.

🥒 Pickleball Open Gym
For the month of January, participants ages 18-54 will have the opportunity to play pickleball, free of charge, during this new Open Gym trial period at the John M. Brown Community Center! View the schedule here.
💻️ PowerSchool Data Breach
All public schools that use or have used PowerSchool’s student information system were affected “to some degree” by last month’s data breach. Some teachers’ and students’ Social Security numbers were exposed in the breach, but at least they didn’t hack our utility bills! (sorry, too soon?)

Things to Do This Week:
🎵 Thursday 1/16: Music Bingo at The Backyard Bar
🎤 Friday 1/17: Joe Gatto ‘Let’s Get into it’ at DPAC (Durham)
🧑🌾 Saturday 1/18: Apex Farmer’s Market
🪩 Saturday 1/18: Y2K Party at Oaklyn Springs Brewery
🥊 Saturday 1/18: UFC Fight Night Watch Party at The Exchange Barbershop & Lounge
🩸 Monday 1/20: Blood Drive with Apex PD
🎥 Tuesday 1/21: Mid-Day Movie: The Marvels (Cary)
🎥 Wednesday 1/22: 10am Movie: Cats & Dogs (Holly Springs)

🗓️ Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Town of Apex has several things going on to celebrate starting on Friday through the weekend.

Local Business
What’s New
A Huenique Barbership & Parlour, 100 Chatham St.
Previously Long Island Barbershop, this location is now under new ownership and is open for business.
Sabatino’s Italian Restaurant, 1001 Davis Dr.
With The Dirty V moving to Raleigh, Sabatino’s has moved into this space and just opened. I’m always on the lookout for good Italian food and will be stopping in here soon. The early Google reviews are looking good! 🤌

What’s Coming
Chick-fil-A
It looks like we are nearing the finish line with the second Apex location. Check out the Mayor’s sneak peak tour from earlier this week.

🔦 Local Business Spotlight: Simple Gifts Community Garden
Note: This is NOT a sponsored post. Just an organization worth highlighting 😁
Since we are celebrating the upcoming opening of Chick-fil-A, I’d like to take a moment and celebrate the organization that recently vacated the land where the restaurant is being built.
Simple Gifts Community Garden, which previously occupied the future Chick-fil-A site, is a family-friendly organization growing high-quality organic produce for those in need.
After the owner's passing, the land was sold, but the organization found a new home through the YMCA of the Triangle.

Since breaking ground in March 2023 at 3109 Tingen Rd, Apex, NC 27502, they've donated well over 4,000 pounds of produce through local area food banks.
Closed for the winter, but re-opening very soon for the season on March 1, Simple Gifts Community Garden is in need of some volunteers. Their family membership dues are just $20/year and they welcome all ages, and offer service hours to those who need it. They refer to it as “no guilt gardening”. No sign-ups are necessary; you just show up when you are able on regularly scheduled garden days.
Visit their website to learn more and join! (I just did!)
Did we miss any? There are quite a few new businesses coming to Apex in the near future. We do our best to keep an eye out for specific opening dates. If we missed anything or if you have any tips on upcoming opening dates, reply to this email and let us know!

🛣️ Street Resurfacing for 2025
(via /u/terrymah) Apex is bidding street resurfacing projects for 2025. See the map below based on the assessments from last year.
Getting resurfaced this year include: Brookfield, Waterford Green, Hunter St, portion of Perry Farms, Kelly Glen, Haddon Hall East.

🛣️ Improve Your Street Smarts
Apex’s Peak Pavement Management System allows residents to view Pavement Condition Index (PCI) scores for any street maintained by the Town of Apex. PCI scores are rated on a 0-100 scale for every street block and indicate the general health of the pavement along each segment of the street system. The Town utilizes several pavement management tools in an effort to maintain an overall average PCI goal of 80.

Animal of the Week - Stitch (*Long Timer*)

Quick Note: I am an animal lover. Especially dogs. Stitch was in the animal shelter for 130 days. Fortunately, AASR pulled him from there and he’s with a foster family. I would adopt him and every other dog in the world if I could. With that said, Stitch’s adoption fee is $380. If you are interested in Stitch, can provide him with a loving forever home, and of course are approved by AASR, I will personally pay the adoption fee for you. Seriously. Let’s get Stitch home!

(via All Animals Sanctuary & Rescue)
Stitch is a really special guy. He was a longer timer in Wake County Animal Control at 130 days and Heartworm positive. He was at risk of euthansia so AASR pulled him out and is currently getting his medical needs started for treatment.
Stitch is high energy and really wants to be with people. He struggles with some crate anxiety but he tries to be a REALLY good boy. To meet him is to instantly love him. We know Stitch's person is out there for him! Are you them?
Stitch is dog selective, but that may also be because of his energy levels of being in the shelter. We hope to be able support him with some training work as well.

🔎 What’s Missing?
I really hope you have enjoyed our first and second issue of The Peak Weekly. I welcome and encourage any and all feedback to make this even better!
Did I get something wrong? Am I missing something important? Is there a topic that we should cover but haven’t yet? Let me know! (I’m still figuring this all out)
A couple pieces of feedback that I have received is better details around town council meetings and a better way to communicate developments that are happening around town.
The agendas are often posted just a day or two before the meetings so that’s tough sometimes to dig into in advance, but I’m looking into some better options. Let me know what you think of the recap of Tuesday’s meeting above.
Regarding developments, the Town does have an interactive map. It’s very pretty, but I personally find it difficult to navigate and it doesn’t provide any sorting or notification settings. I’m thinking about developing a tool that extracts this data and makes it easier to search/sort and set notifications. Interested in your ideas about this or anything else!
